Rebel

Rebel is a flexible, sustainable mixed-use complex catering to an ambitious international audience. Located beside the A10 ring road in the south of Amsterdam, on a site intersecting the Zuidas business district and the quiet Rivierenbuurt neighbourhood, the bold building programmatically and architecturally contrasts as well as complements both contexts. The urban dynamic of the site is captured in the design with a strong, characteristic identity that is recognisable from all sides thanks to its three-dimensional open grid.

This smart framework offers spatial flexibility that enables the innovative programming of spaces. In this way it accommodates diverse functions that can adapt and evolve over time. Rebel offers a lively mix of commercial and social/cultural functions with the ground floor as the social heart of the complex – the cinema, restaurant, shops and coffee bar with workspaces are accessed from here. Diverse apartment types are combined with branded offices and smaller workspace units. Residents and occupants have the possibility to share cars and bikes.

A lively, future-proof complex as an iconic hub for dynamic urban dwellers.

At its core, voids bring light and air into the deep volume while visually and physically connecting the floors and functions. Above, the generous spaces open up with cathedral-like proportions to create a dramatic effect.

Transparent and open, the bold building communicates honestly with its surroundings. The ground floor is the social heart of Rebel. As a meeting place for residents, occupants and the neighbourhood, this urban living room is activated throughout the entire day.

The open framework enables flexibility while retaining the building’s character and coherence.

Future proof: a smart three-dimensional grid can be flexibly programmed to accommodate diverse functions, both after completion and in the future to make the building resilient.

The framework can be filled in by adding floors and walls. However, their absence has a more powerful effect: openings, outdoor spaces and voids create a high quality of space for living, working and leisure.

Rebel’s raw shell is softened by a lush green core.

The facade elements made of raw, recycled concrete indicate work and living zones; untreated larch wood frames the public areas. This combination underlines the character of Rebel’s raw shell. A lush green landscape flows seamlessly from the core to the outside. Composed of carefully chosen plants and trees this green interior enhances the working and living environment and acoustics in the shared internal spaces, and softens the roof and layered facade of the complex.
