Uilenstede is situated to the north of Amstelveen and contains about 3400 student houses, making it one of the largest student campuses in Europe. In 2009 the municipality of Amstelveen, DUWO and the VU University Amsterdam joint forces to develop a large plot of 12.000m2.
The size of the project automatically causes a transition between architecture and urbanism. Can we create a diversity in volumes without losing the consistency of the urban intervention?
In our design we made a careful composition of seven different buildings, creating a lively courtyard suitable for picnics and outdoor games. With our design for 724 new student houses we think that Uilenstede will no longer be just a place to ‘live’ but also a place to ‘stay’’. Most of the outdoor spaces and entrances are facing the coutyard enhancing the interaction between the students stimulating the safety and intimate atmosphere.
