Our project Little Manhattan is located next to the railway station Lelylaan. Encircled by complex transit networks that block the site from its context, the plot becomes an isolated island. These grey surroundings are now dominated by trains, trams, busses, cars and metro’s. Just to compare: the generated amount of traffic and passers equals that of Amstel Station. Little Manhattan will tie the plot to its surroundings again.
The strategy for Little Manhattan consists of three principles.
First a U-shaped envelope is positioned on the plot, its height responding to the surrounding buildings.
Then two towers are placed to visually accentuate the U-shape. The two towers mark Lelylaan station, functioning respectively as orientation points leading from Cornelis Lelylaan and the extension of Willem Frogerstraat.
On the smallest scale there’s a focus on the residents of Little Manhattan. The entrances to their apartments are situated at the two inner corners of the building and open up the courtyard. In this way the students and young professionals each gain a separate entrance.
