The former industrial area Buiksloterham now consists of large and undefined plots of land. Fronting Tolhuiskanaal, the hotel is designed as five different, interconnected volumes in a park-like setting. Varying in height, function and atmosphere, they are grouped around courtyards. At the heart of the complex are collective spaces where tourists, business travellers and locals come together.
The transparent ground floor and courtyards enable a seamless flow between the landscape and interior. On the waterfront the public restaurant, terrace, garden and jetty form an attractive ensemble.
The hotel is firmly rooted in the neighbourhood thanks to close collaborations with local partners for the hospitality elements, art and facilities.
Sustainability and technology are leading factors in the project for all partners. With them we co-created a unique circular water system that collects, holds, filters and recycles water for various applications, including a play fountain. The hotel will also be an ‘All-Electric’ (gas-free) building, whereby the ambition is to obtain a BREEAM Excellent certification.
“Water usage in hotels is often very high, so we are pleased to address this issue in the design of the hotel,” says Dirk Dekker from Being Development. “This hotel is a good example of a building that, architecturally, fits its environment and has a positive influence on an area that is in rapid development.”
